The rupture, when it came, was explosive. The seventeenth century’s scientific revolution — Copernicus, Galileo, Kepler, and above all Newton — did not merely revise natural knowledge. It transformed the understanding of what knowledge was. If Newton’s Principia could compress the motions of every planet and falling apple into mathematical laws deduced from observation, then the entire apparatus of scholastic reasoning looked suddenly like an elaborate detour.
Descartes resolved to tear the edifice down and rebuild it from the bare fact of his own thinking. The rationalists — Spinoza, Leibniz — followed, constructing vast systems on the model of geometry. The empiricists — Locke, Berkeley, Hume — insisted that knowledge could only come from experience. Kant, startled awake by Hume, produced a Copernican revolution in philosophy. From Kant the river accelerated into Hegel and the nineteenth-century crisis.
The conversation had entered a new phase. The medieval synthesis could no longer contain the energies unleashed by the new science.
The Scientific Revolution as Philosophical Crisis
Copernicus in 1543 proposed a heliocentric system that displaced the Earth from the centre. Galileo’s telescope in 1610 supplied the observational ammunition: the moon’s surface was mountainous, Jupiter had its own moons, the phases of Venus could only be explained if Venus orbited the Sun. Kepler’s laws described planetary motion with mathematical precision. Newton in 1687 unified the heavens and the Earth under universal mathematical laws.
The consequence was not merely revised astronomical beliefs. The entire medieval picture of a purposeful, hierarchically ordered cosmos — in which every thing had its natural place — was replaced by a universe of matter in motion, governed by laws indifferent to human purposes or divine intentions.
If the physical world could be understood without reference to final causes or divine purposes, then the scholastic synthesis — which had assumed that the structure of reality was ultimately intelligible in terms of the divine mind — faced a fundamental challenge. The new science seemed to render the old philosophy not merely incomplete but obsolete.
Descartes and the Method of Doubt
René Descartes was born in 1596 and educated by the Jesuits at the College of La Flèche. He abandoned the study of letters with the growing suspicion that the whole elaborate edifice of received knowledge was built on sand. The decisive experience came on the night of 10 November 1619, when he underwent three vivid dreams that he interpreted as a divine charge to reform human knowledge, beginning with philosophy.
The image that gripped him was that of a unified science, built on the model of mathematics — not the particular results of arithmetic or geometry, but their underlying method: the systematic derivation of truth from self-evident starting points by clear and necessary steps.
The Meditations (1641) delivered the programme in concentrated form. If I have ever accepted a false belief as true, Descartes reasons, then I cannot trust a faculty that has deceived me even once. The remedy is to doubt any belief that rests on a foundation less than perfectly certain.
The senses sometimes deceive us. Perhaps I am dreaming. Even mathematics seems vulnerable if a malicious demon has arranged my faculties so that I go wrong in the clearest cases.
The method of doubt seems to dissolve everything. But in the Second Meditation, Descartes discovers that the very act of doubting guarantees the existence of the doubter. “I think, therefore I am” — cogito ergo sum — is the first indubitable truth, the Archimedean point from which reconstruction can begin.
What he is certain of is not a body or a physical thing, but a thinking thing: something that doubts, understands, affirms, denies, wills, imagines, and feels. His essence is thought.
Mind, Matter, and the New Dualism
This is the seed of mind-body dualism. If mind and matter are genuinely distinct substances — thinking and extension different kinds of being — then how they interact becomes a puzzle. Descartes’s answer in terms of the pineal gland satisfied almost no one, and the mind-body problem remains one of philosophy’s most persistent difficulties.
The deeper significance lies elsewhere. Descartes placed the thinking self, not God or Nature or Scripture, at the centre of the philosophical universe. He drew a sharp line between mind and matter. He performed this in prose of such lucid elegance that his works could be read by educated people who had never opened a philosophical treatise. The subsequent centuries have never quite erased that line.
The Rationalist Dream and Its Discontents
The rationalists who followed — Spinoza and Leibniz — took the Cartesian programme to its ultimate conclusions. Spinoza concluded that there could be only one substance: God identical with Nature. Leibniz, horrified, proposed an alternative universe of irreducibly mind-like monads, each a living mirror of the cosmos, coordinated by pre-established harmony.
The result was magnificent and alarming. If reason could produce such radically different results, one had to ask whether the method was as secure as its inventors believed.
The Empiricist Counter-Revolution
The empiricists — Locke, Berkeley, and Hume — responded by insisting that knowledge could only come from experience. Locke argued that the mind at birth is a blank slate (tabula rasa), furnished with ideas only through sensation and reflection. Berkeley pushed the logic further: if all we ever know are our own ideas, then the very notion of material substance independent of perception is incoherent — esse est percipi, to be is to be perceived. Hume applied the same corrosive scepticism to causation itself: we never observe necessary connections, only constant conjunctions; the idea of causation is a habit of the mind, not a feature of the world.
Hume’s scepticism, Kant later said, awoke him from his dogmatic slumbers. The problem was not merely that previous philosophy had failed to justify its claims. It was that the new science itself — whose success was undeniable — rested on assumptions (causation, induction, the uniformity of nature) that neither rationalism nor empiricism had been able to secure.
The Task of Reconstruction
The Great Rupture was not a destruction of philosophy but a reorientation of its fundamental question. The medieval synthesis had assumed that the structure of reality was ultimately intelligible in terms of the divine mind, and that human reason, properly disciplined, could participate in that intelligibility. The new science and the new philosophy had called that assumption into question.
What remained was the task of rebuilding — of determining what could still be known with certainty, what methods were legitimate, and what kind of relationship between mind and world was possible once the old foundations had been removed.
